You can begin any quarter of the year and can start with one or more classes. If you are working during the day, you can take classes or obtain your degree solely with evening and Saturday classes. Some courses are offered online. Courses may be waived with department permission for pertinent work experience.
The goal of our program is to offer students "hands-on" field experience while providing an excellent learning environment in the classroom. In addition to class work and field work, our department presents a variety of speakers each year and encourages student participation in professional and specialty organizations. Our student and alumni professional network provides a chance for exchange of current information and excellent employment opportunities.
Facilities: Offices, classrooms, and the greenhouse are located in modern facilities that are closely interwoven with the facilities of the college's Grounds Department. We work on projects on and off-campus depending on the nature of the class. Plant sales occur through the greenhouse classes on a regular basis.
Staff and Students:
Three full-time instructors and approximately 15 part-time instructors teach over 300 students. Everyone is well-versed in their subject matter and are dedicated to the educational welfare of their classes.
Guest lecturers and the staff of the Grounds Department help at various points. About 40% of students choose to take only evening classes; about 60% of students are already working in the field, with 40% of those working already owning their own business. The average age currently is 38, with a range of from 17 to 68. We are proud of a placement rate that has consistently exceeded 90%.
Thank you for your interest in our program. If you have any specific questions, or would like to receive more information, please call (425) 640-1739 or email horticulture@edcc.edu.
